Chapter 6
Well, that was one way to skip out on training. Though Cas was pretty sure Burdock would make her atone for it somehow. But a body had been found on her property, so he couldnât expect Cas to abandon the coroner and crime scene team to run laps, could he?
Two hours later, Cas had been more than a little relieved when the coroner, after examining Silverâs body, pronounced the preliminary suspected cause of death as strangulation rather than exsanguination. When sheâd first found the body, Casâ mind had gone wild trying to think of possible suspects, and the four rectangular boxes delivered by the TROLL team had kept jumping to the forefront of her thoughts. Putting two and two together, sheâd figured they might be the vampire performers from the show. Sheâd half-wondered if the food poisoning issue might have driven one of her lodgers to look for another meal source.
The coroner had also said the estimated time of death was around three in the morning. That was after the storm had passed.
âMs. Lorne!â
Cas turned in the direction of the shout and saw Waverly running toward her from the parking lot. The receptionist stumbled to a stop in front of Cas, breathing hard. Her pink spikey hair looked normal, but Waverly wasnât wearing a bit of makeup, which Cas had never seen before. And she wore a light lavender jogging suit and white sneakers instead of her regular tailored business casual clothing.
âIs it true?â Waverly panted. âIs it Silver?â She searched Casâ face with wide eyes. âWait, whatâs wrong with your skin?â
In that moment, Cas wanted to shrivel up into a small ball and roll into the mud. Embarrassed and not wanting to explain her magical faux pas, she played it off. âOh, nothing. I was on a run when I found the . . . um, her.â
âItâs true, then. Itâs Silver.â Waverly clutched at her throat. âI was hoping the rumor mill was wrong.â
Cas nodded. âItâs a shame, isnât it?â
Waverly gave Cas a sharp look and then shook her head. âOh, I donât care that sheâs gone. She was a horrible person. Scores of people despised the woman. Itâs a wonder she lasted this long. But I know Iâm going to be a suspect after that huge fight we had at the party last night.â Her eyes darted around as though she expected to see someone swooping in to handcuff her right that second.
Cas bit her bottom lip in a moment of conflict. Waverlyâs cavalier attitude about the murder was strange. Was it a witch thing to be cold about that sort of thing? Death was part of the norm for the supernatural, so when it happened, it wasnât a big deal? Granted, Silver Riverman hadnât made a good impression on Cas. The woman had managed to be one hundred percent insufferable in less than five minutes. But still, no one deserved what had been dished out to Silver.
The normal way to respond to Waverlyâs fear would be to reassure her she was wrong.
